The Stokes drift in ocean surface drift prediction

چکیده

The importance of explicitly resolving the Stokes drift in ocean surface modelling is demonstrated by comparing four models with 58,612 observational data points obtained from undrogued drifting buoys Estuary and Gulf St. Lawrence, Canada. Drift model inputs are regional atmosphere circulation, spectral wave models. control considers near-surface currents provided top grid cell circulation model, which 5-m thick, a correction term proportional to wind. three other account for unresolved current shear extrapolating assuming Ekman dynamics. Two these consider drift, without wind term. Proposed reduce mean separation distance between observed predicted trajectories 34–40% relative on average, forecast times ranging 3 72 h. best improvement respect all metrics used is, however, that takes into any (skill score 0.93 after h 0.81 h).

On surface drift currents in the ocean

A new model of surface drift currents is constructed using the full nonlinear equations of motion. This model includes the balance between Coriolis forces due to the mean and wave-induced motions and the surface wind stresses. The approach used in the analysis is similar to the work by Craik & Leibovich (1976) and Leibovich (1977), but the emphasis is on the mean motion rather than the small-sc...

Stochastic Stokes’ drift

Classical Stokes’ drift is the small time-averaged drift velocity of suspended nondiffusing particles in a fluid due to the presence of a wave. We consider the effect of adding diffusion to the motion of the particles, and show in particular that a nonzero time-averaged drift velocity exists in general even when the classical Stokes’ drift is zero. Our results are obtained from a general proced...

On the connection between Stokes drift and Darwin drift

Stokes and Darwin drift, for irrotational waves and flow past rigid bodies, are analysed in a general framework and shown to be fundamentally the same thing.

Stokes' Drift: a Rocking Ratchet

We derive the explicit analytic expression for the Stokes' drift in one dimension in the presence of a dichotomic Markov forcing. For small amplitudes of the forcing, the drift is enhanced, but the enhancement is reduced with increasing frequency of the forcing. On the other hand, a reduction of the drift or even a flux reversal can be induced at larger amplitudes, while the flux is now found t...

Stokes’ Drift of Linear Defects

A linear defect, viz. an elastic string, diffusing on a planar substrate traversed by a travelling wave experiences a drag known as Stokes’ drift. In the limit of an infinitely long string, such a mechanism is shown to be characterized by a sharp threshold that depends on the wave parameters, the string damping constant and the substrate temperature. Moreover, the onset of the Stokes’ drift is ...
